FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
IMPORTANT INFORMATION

A reminder to all parents that all the children making their First Communion are expected to attend the morning recollection given by Fr Vachon this Saturday 24th October at the school from 9am - 11am.

If they cannot attend, then please speak to Fr Vachon.

This Sunday the day of the First Communions, please ensure that the children are at the church to meet in the hall at 9.30am where Mrs Sue Pastor will prepare them for the Mass. After the Mass there will be a short breakfast and cutting of the cake to celebrate this special day for them.

FROM THE VICE PRINCIPAL …. PUNCTUALITY

Dear Parents,

It has been observed for some time now, that punctuality in arriving at school to drop off and pick up your children has deteriorated to the extent that it is becoming quite a widespread problem.

It provides a good example of the need to be constantly aware of our human nature tendencies. We attempt to provide our students with virtuous characteristics, of which punctuality is one. If it becomes habitual to be not punctual it is our human nature that requires apprehension. If there is no redressing of this human nature it will continue in the bad habit. Habitual lack of punctuality therefore, needs to be redressed.

Punctuality is going to be monitored more closely for the rest of this year. If it is observed as a persistent problem for particular families, you can expect to receive a letter about the problem.

The student handbook indicates that students should be in attendance at school by the time the “warning” bell rings at 8.25. Parents are asked to make a special effort to commit themselves to meeting this requirement as a first step in being more punctual.

Mr Harley Chipperfield

DID YOU READ this last week? If not, please take the time to do so right now!

What is Your Speed????
When travelling through the township of Garfield along Main St, are you observing the speed limits at the appropriate times? It has been noted that some of our parents are not aware of the necessary limits on the speed allowed and hence are putting themselves in the danger of getting a speeding fine. On a more serious note though, we are concerned for pedestrians, especially school children. Near the butcher school crossing flags are displayed even though the crossing is not manned. When these flags are displayed you are to treat it like a normal crosswalk and give way to pedestrians.

Also at school times the speed limit in that area is 40km per hour!

Reminder from the Bursar….

School Fees:
Fees for Term 4 have been posted and are due for payment by 9 November. Conveyance for Term 4 will be credited to your accounts once it is received, usually towards to the end of the term.

EMA:
Please note that there are a number of EMA cheques for Semester 2 which have not been collected/or signed over to the College to be offset against fees.

School Start Bonus:
Parents with students commencing Prep or Year 7 in 2010 will be issued with $300 School Start Bonus vouchers. They will be handed out by the end of this term.

School Building Plan Update

  • An appeal was lodged through VCAT against the council’s decision to approve the College’s Building Plan including the removal of five trees. This appeal was later withdrawn in writing by the Objector, however the matter still remains officially active and in the hands of the Minister for Development to assess if VCAT should proceed with the case any further.
  • The College has until 20th December 2010 to complete the construction of the Library, Multi-Purpose Hall and upgrade of the Primary School.
  • The Environmental Architecture Plan is progressing well.
  • The cricket nets for the senior boys are coming along slowly.
  • Building plans will be available for parents and staff to view once the College has received official planning permission.

**UPDATE: Since the last P&F meeting we have received word that the existing VCAT objection has been formally withdrawn and that planning permission for the College is forthcoming.**

Grant and Fundraising Update

  • The President wishes to compile a Calendar of Grants which are available throughout the year in order to better prepare for deadlines.
  • ACTION: Follow-up with Mr Murphy if $4000 Council plant grant was applied for - (President).
  • President has called for anyone who wishes to assist with grant applications or who has ideas for grants to contact him. The College could be receiving more grants if people could join with the President to form a committee to work together to meet grant deadlines.
  • One example of a possible grant is via the 'Smart Water Fund': www.smartwater.com.au. There is $2 million now available to fund innovative sustainable water use projects. Individuals, community groups, business and industry are invited to apply for seed funding to research, plan, design, construct or operate an innovative water saving, water recycling or biosolids management project. Do you have a smart water idea? Contact the P&F if you need help. Applications close 20 November 2009.

Questions on Notice (from previous meeting)

  • Can anything be done to improve the security of the college?
  • There is a minor problem around the Tynong area with acts of vandalism.
  • In light of the ongoing issues, a security risk assessment will be carried out on the College with the view of making the school and staff safer, particularly after hours.
  • Father Delsorte will liaise with persons from the P&F community with the relevant experience and expertise to improve security measures.
ACTION: As an additional measure, contact will be made with Council regarding the possibility of clearing land along the railway boundary fence-line (President).

Miscellaneous

  • The President has been approached by a parishioner who would like to know if anyone in the parish is capable of building a sub-ground water tank on a property on the Mornington Peninsula.
  • For future reference, any similar inquiries can be made in the College Chronicle or the church bulletin.
  • Suggestion was made to have a trade/business noticeboard in the foyer of Corpus Christi Church.
  • Mrs Geraldine Freriks will give an update on the Chocolate Drive at the next meeting.

Next meeting 23rd November 2009.
