September 10th, 2009

Dear Parents,

Two weeks ago when looking at Pope Pius XI’s Encyclical on Education we saw that there are three environments in which the child grows: the family, the Church and the modern school. We have briefly looked at the family and now we will look at the Church.
The Pope says that the educational environment of the Church is made up of the Sacraments; the sacred ritual; the material fabric of the churches, whose liturgy and art have an immense educational value; and her schools.

People have often commented on the respect and reverence which children show at Mass. While they are neither angels nor perfect, the children, who find it difficult to still at other times, do show a real respect in church. Mass, the Sacrament of Sacraments teaches that respect. The serious attitude of the priest at the altar, the care of those serving, all the externals of worship, form the soul in how it should act firstly towards God but and then to those around us.

As we progress from the low Mass all the way to the Pontifical Mass the splendour of the liturgy teaches hierarchy, respect and reverence. We recently had a splendid ceremony of Confirmations followed by a Pontifical Mass. It was long, but we were carried along by the solemness of the ceremony in all its details: the vestments, the correctness of serving which was the result of many practices, the beauty of the singing, once again the fruit of hours and even years of preparation. The Roman Liturgy in its marvellous restraint encourages self-control and self-discipline.

Here we are seeing education in its highest level: the formation of the soul for its worship of God , in time and in eternity.

We try to make our churches beautiful. There may be a simple dignity in a poor chapel, clean and well-maintained but to see a building that is beautiful, in and out, a fitting residence for God on earth, is a sermon all of its own. To enter the hushed environment of the church, far from the noise and bustle of the world, leads us to lift our hearts and souls to the God Who dwells in the Tabernacle.

That is why church and liturgy have always been considered a marvellous means of education.

My Prayer Book

Happiness in Goodness
Reflections, Counsels, Prayers and Devotions
By Rev. F. X. Lasance
Nihil Obstat, Imprimatur, New York, 19 September 1908

The following Reflection is found in this little treasured book.

Character

Character is the product of daily, hourly actions, and words, and thoughts; daily kindnesses, sacrifices for the good of others, struggles against temptation, submissiveness under trial. Oh! It is these, like the blending colours in a picture, or the blending notes of music, which constitute the man.
Saints are men of character. A man has character, when he is conscientious; when he is not moved by every passing impulse or feeling but by a fixed will to do always what is right and good; when he does not go where it is easiest to go, but where it is his duty to go; when he controls his passions; when he has the moral courage to stand up for his religious convictions.
make us neither better nor happier, and we shall receive no reward for them.” Cultivate a cheerful temper. Says the Wise Man in the Book of Proverbs: “A joyful mind maketh age flourishing: a sorrowful spirit drieth up the bones” (Prov. xvii.22). Look at the bright side of things.

“Two men looked out through their prison bars; The one saw mud, and the other stars.”
STEVENSON.

Saint of the Day

10th September: ST. NICHOLAS OF TOLENTINO.

BORN in answer to the prayer of a holy mother, and vowed before his birth to the service of God, Nicholas never lost his baptismal innocence. His austerities were conspicuous even in the austere Order—the Hermits of St. Augustine—to which he belonged, and to the remonstrances which were made by his superiors he only replied, "How can I be said to fast, while every morning at the altar I receive my God?" He conceived an ardent charity for the Holy Souls, so near and yet so far from their Saviour; and often after his Mass it was revealed to him that the souls for whom he had offered the Holy Sacrifice had been admitted to the presence of God. Amidst his loving labors for God and man, he was haunted by fear of his own sinfulness. "The heavens," said he, "are not pure in the sight of Him Whom I serve; how then shall I, a sinful man, stand before Him?" As he pondered on these things, Mary, the Queen of all Saints, appeared before him. "Fear not, Nicholas," she said, "all is well with you: my Son bears you in His Heart, and I am your protection." Then his soul was at rest; and he heard, we are told, the songs which the angels sing in the presence of their Lord. He died September 10, 1310.

Reflection. - Would you die the death of the just? there is only one way to secure the fulfilment of your wish. Live the life of the just. For it is impossible that one who has been faithful to God in life should make a bad or an unhappy end.
